• No article with professions: Unlike English, German typically drops the article when stating your profession. Say "Ich bin Lehrer" (I am a teacher), not "Ich bin ein Lehrer." Adding the article implies emphasis or specification.
• Gender matters: German distinguishes between masculine and feminine forms of most professions. Women use the feminine form (usually ending in -in): der Arzt → die Ärztin, der Lehrer → die Lehrerin.
• Modern alternatives: The traditional word Krankenschwester (nurse, literally "sick sister") is being replaced by the gender-neutral Pflegefachkraft or the masculine/feminine pair Krankenpfleger/Krankenpflegerin in official contexts.
• Compound words: German loves compound nouns for professions. Feuerwehrmann (fire + defense + man), Krankenpfleger (sick + caretaker), and Rechtsanwalt (law + advocate) are typical examples.
• Using "als": When describing your work, use als (as): "Ich arbeite als Ingenieur." This is more common in conversational German than the formal "von Beruf."
