Grammar in Context
The dialogue uses appeler in two important phone-call patterns: je vous appelle au sujet de mon rendez-vous and est-ce que je peux vous rappeler ? Use appeler quelqu'un for calling a person, and appeler au sujet de quelque chose when you want to state the topic of the call.
French also uses rappeler for calling someone back: je peux vous rappeler, il vous rappellera cet après-midi, or pouvez-vous me rappeler ? In formal calls, the object pronoun changes with the relationship: je vous rappelle for a professional contact, je te rappelle for a friend.
To make a request sound polite, combine est-ce que je peux... with an infinitive: est-ce que je peux vous rappeler ?, est-ce que je peux laisser un message ?, or est-ce que je peux parler à Monsieur Martin ?
